How to play

Ad Block is a browser game about the small daily war between you and the pop-up ad. One ad fills the screen at a time, and only one thing gets rid of it: working out how this particular ad wants to be closed, before the timer empties.

  1. Read the ad. Each one hides its close button differently — a tiny X, a drifting X, a row of switches, a memory grid.
  2. Solve the puzzle. Do that and the ad is blocked, and the next one slides in harder than the last.
  3. Never touch the ad. Tapping the ad itself is exactly what it wants. That ends the run instantly.
  4. Beat the clock. Every ad is timed, and the time you are given shrinks the longer you survive.

The puzzles

Sixteen ways an ad can refuse to close, dealt at random and getting nastier as your run goes on. A few of them:

The tiny X

A close button that shrinks and fades the deeper you get.

The runaway X

It drifts across the ad. You have to catch it.

The chain

Close one X and another appears somewhere else. Nothing tells you how many are left.

Watch and repeat

Dots flash a sequence. Play it back from memory.

Not a robot

A verify box that dodges your finger before it will be ticked.

Spring-loaded switches

Flip them all on at once — they flip themselves back off.

Memory match

A grid of cards shown for a heartbeat. Find the pair.

The lit grid

Only the lit squares are safe. Everything else is the ad.

Scoring and streaks

Blocking an ad scores points, but how you block it decides how many. Time left on the clock converts to bonus, so a fast clean block is worth several times a slow scrappy one. Block ads cleanly in a row and a streak multiplier builds up to ×1.5 — until a wrong answer breaks it and costs you a second of clock as well.

The leaderboard keeps the top ten runs. Miss the cut and the run is not recorded at all, so there is always a number to beat.

Questions

Is this an actual ad blocker?
No — and if that is what you came for, this will not help. Ad Block is a game about being an ad blocker. It blocks nothing on your device and installs nothing. It just gives you the job for a few minutes.
Is it free?
Yes. It runs in your browser, with no install, account or download.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, and it was built for one first. The puzzles are designed around a thumb, so a phone is the better way to play. It works on desktop too.
How long is a game?
A run lasts as long as you keep blocking — usually a minute or two. One mistimed tap ends it, so most sessions are several short runs in a row.
